Always maintain a valid Form I-20 during your stay in the U.S. The expiration date (item #5) on the Form I-20 is when you are expected to complete your studies. Extensions must be processed before the expiration date on the current Form I-20. We recommend you submit extension paperwork within the same semester the I-20 expires. Forms are available in the reception area of the ISS office.
Documents required to apply for extension of F-1 status are:
- Student Request Form
- Academic Advisor Recommendation Form
- Current Form I-20
- Passport
- I-94 card
- Original financial support for the time period requested (also dependents)
These forms should be completed and submitted to ISS.
Caution:
Extension of F-1 status is the student’s responsibility. If a student misses the deadline and applies late, he/she risks denial of the application. If a student is employed and overlooks the date, they are considered to have engaged in unauthorized employment. Such mistakes can have serious consequences, therefore students should make certain to apply early.
