J-1: School Transfer

Transfer to Purdue University

J-1 faculty/staff at another US institution may transfer to Purdue University by using one of the following two processes:

  • Transfer within the US
Future J-1 faculty/staff would request their current J-1 program sponsor to release their SEVIS records to Purdue, using our office's transfer form (obtained from the ISS liaison after the department has submitted an Exchange Visitor (EV) Request to ISS). On the release date, ISS can create a Purdue DS 2019. The faculty/staff would then travel directly to Purdue and receive the Purdue DS 2019 when they report their arrival to ISS.

  • Transfer by Travel outside the US
As above, future faculty/staff would request their SEVIS records to be released to Purdue University. Upon receiving the Department EV Request Form and the transfer form mentioned above, ISS would create and send a DS 2019 to the faculty/staff person. That person may then leave the US with this Purdue issued Form DS 2019 and use it to re-enter the US (reporting to ISS after re-entering completes the transfer).

Please note the time restrictions for the various J-1 categories when applying for a transfer. Furthermore, exchange visitors attempting to transfer must show that they are pursuing the same objective originally indicated on the original appointment letter.

Transfer from Purdue to another institution

  • Complete a Transfer Out Form (SEVIS "Release" Form) in our office to release your SEVIS record to the new institution.

  • Upon the date requested, ISS releases the record to the new institution. After that date, ISS cannot cancel the transfer.

  • Upon arrival at the new institution, that institution will create a new DS 2019 for the new location, validating your new program in SEVIS.
