J-1: School Transfer

Transfer within the US

J-1 faculty/staff in the US may transfer their J program by using one of the following two processes:

Transfer from another institution to Purdue

Future J-1 faculty/staff would request their current J-1 program sponsor to release their SEVIS records to Purdue, during our office's MyISS online process (initiated by the ISS liaison). ISS will review the online e-forms and (upon determining a transfer is warranted) email instructions to internationals and their current Program Sponsor to release their J program to Purdue.

Please note the time restrictions for the various J-1 categories when applying for a transfer. Furthermore, internationals attempting to transfer must show that they are pursuing the same objective originally begun when they first started their J program.

Transfer from Purdue to another institution

  • Complete a Transfer Out Form (SEVIS "Release" Form) in our office to release your SEVIS record to the new institution. Note that the other institution's international office fax number as well as J program number is required. Below are instructions regarding the three dates requested on the form:

    • Completion Date: Date you will complete your program should be your last day of employment or research activities at Purdue.

    • Release Date: Date you wish to be released can be as early as the day after you complete your program or as late as 15 days later.

    • Start Date at New Institution: Date you will begin the new program must be the same as the release date.

    • (Note that some institutions will require a start date of earlier than 15 days, so check with that institution's international office regarding their policy in such cases.)

  • Once complete, give the SEVIS Release form to our front desk along with any forms the new institution is requesting.

  • Within five (5) business days, ISS will have the release requested in the US government database, SEVIS.

    • ISS will fax a notice to the new institution along with any forms requested.

    • At any time before the release date, the request could be cancelled.

  • Upon the release date requested, SEVIS automatically releases the record to the new institution. After that date, ISS cannot cancel the transfer.

  • Upon arrival at the new institution, that institution will create a new DS 2019 for the new location, validating your new program in SEVIS.
