International Parent Events

International parents and family members of students attending BGRi are welcome to International Parents Orientation from August 12-16, 2014.  All free events are marked. The events parents will pay for are marked "on your own." Note this schedule is currently under development for the 2014 event, please check back often for updates.

Tuesday, August 12

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Lounge, Stewart Center, Room TBD.
After arriving on campus, parents will  want to come to the International Parents' Lounge in Stewart Center, Room 202 for free light refreshments and sign up for campus tours. Learn more about the week’s activities from knowledgeable volunteer staff.  

Community Bus Tour, Welcome to Greater Lafayette
Lafayette-West Lafayette is a wonderful community in which to live, work and play. Learn more about the history and amenities of this great community by participating in the Lafayette bus tour. Bus will leave from Purdue Memorial Union east entrance, across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage. (Bus sign up required)

Picnic at Columbian Park, Lafayette
End the community bus tour at a picnic supper at Columbian Park (Yellow Shelters 1-3) catered by Arni’s. Visit the Columbian Park Zoo. Meet Purdue staff, community members, Lafayette Mayor Tony  Roswarski and West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis. Free picnic is hosted by ISS and Purdue Federal Credit Union.

Wednesday, August 13

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Lounge, Stewart Center, Room TBD
Learn more about the week’s activities from knowledgeable volunteer staff.  Sign up for tours as space is limited!

Hour-long walking tour of campus
Discover Purdue through a morning walking tour of the central campus. The hour-long tour will depart from the International Parents’ Lounge and will be led by student ambassadors from Purdue’s Visitor Information Center. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

“Your Student’s Success at Purdue,” Stewart Center, Room TBD
ISS staff will highlight what international students need to know to be successful in their years at Purdue. This session will help to answer parents’ questions about residence life, fee payment, immigration matters and activities with ISS. Special visit by PFCU.

Lunch (On Your Own)  or with Student in Dining Court 

“Just for International Parents," Stewart Center, Room TBD
Purdue staff and student volunteers will lead this question and answer session just for international parents and their families. 
 Topics: BGRi, Academic Success, Social Adjustment

Bus Tour of Purdue Campus
Take this riding tour to gain a broader view of Purdue’s 700 acre West Lafayette campus.  The tour will include a drive-by of the outer areas of the campus. The tour bus will depart from the Purdue Memorial Union Hotel east entrance (across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage) with stops at the Co-Rec, Discovery Park and Armstrong Hall of Engineering.

Official Welcome Event for BGRi Students, Location to be determined.
Parents are welcome to attend this event, also attended by West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis and key Purdue staff. Reserved seating for parents in balcony section.

Thursday, August 14

“Just for International Parents," Stewart Center, Room TBD
Purdue staff and student volunteers will lead this question and answer session just for international parents and their families. Topics: Student Health, Safety and Wellness

Downtown Tour of Main Street and Lunch (On Your Own) 
The tour bus will depart from the Purdue Memorial Union east entrance, across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage. We will have a leisurely hour to stroll down Main Street and head for lunch (on your own) at noon  at a local restaurant. (Bus sign up required)

Sports Complex Tour - EVENT TENATIVE. Bus tour with stop offs at Ross-Ade Stadium, Mackey Arena, Schwarz Tennis Center and intramural fields.  (Bus sign up required)

Tour of Center for Career Opportunities (CCO) - EVENT TENTATIVE. Learn about the resources at Purdue for your student to develop his/her career plans and land a job after graduation.

Welcome Reception for International Parents. Location TBD. International parents are invited to a reception to meet Purdue staff who are eager to meet you!

Friday, August 15

8:30 AM - 5:00 PM - International Parents' Lounge, Stewart Center, Room 202

8:30 AM – 11:30 AM – BGRi students move out of temporary residence and into permanent residences. Parents can assist student if they wish. 

11:30 AM – 1:30 PM – Lunch (On Your Own) or with Student in Dining Court 

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM – Tour of Co-Rec Center (across from Wiley Dining Court)

Tips for Parents,” Stewart Center, Room TBD
Tips for parents to relate to their student while living and studying abroad. Student success depends on parents and students building healthy connections that will facilitate students’ growth, development and well-being. Hear and learn from current parents and students.

Experience Wolf Park “Howl Night!” EVENT TENTATIVE. You will need to eat dinner before/after trip (dinner not included). Board buses for Wolf Park “Howl Night" at Purdue Memorial Union east entrance (next to Grant Street Parking Garage) at 6:45 pm. Ticket price for “Howl Night” is $8/person. Event is 7:30-9:00 pm. Leave Wolf Park at 9 pm. Arrive at PMU by 9:30 pm. (Bus sign up required.)
