International Parent Events


August 12-16, 2014, international parents and family members of students attending BGRi are welcome to participate in International Parents Orientation.

Parents Orientation is free of charge except for lunches. Questions about the orientation?  Contact Ms. Beth Tucker, Coordinator of Programs and Engagement, in International Programs.

Tuesday, August 12

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Home Base, Stewart Center, Room 214AB
After arriving on campus, parents will  want to stop in to Stewart Center, Room 214AB to get their registration packet and sign up for tours. Learn more about the week’s activities from parents orientation staff.  

5:00 PM - 6:30 PM - Community Bus Tour, Welcome to Greater Lafayette
Lafayette-West Lafayette is a wonderful community in which to live, work and play. Learn more about the history and amenities of this great community by participating in the Lafayette bus tour. Bus will leave from Purdue Memorial Union east entrance, across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage. (Bus and event sign up required.)

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM - Picnic at Columbian Park, Lafayette
End the community bus tour at a picnic supper at Columbian Park (Yellow Shelters 1-3) catered by Arni’s. Visit the Columbian Park Zoo. Meet Purdue staff, community members, Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski and West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis.

Wednesday, August 13

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Home Base, Stewart Center, Room 214AB
After arriving on campus, parents will  want to stop in to Stewart Center, Room 214AB to get their registration packet and sign up for tours. Learn more about the week’s activities from parents orientation staff.  

9:00 AM – Hour-long walking tour of campus
Discover Purdue through a morning walking tour of the central campus. The hour-long tour will depart from the PMU Welcome Center and will be led by Welcome Center student ambassadors. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

10:00 – 11:15 AM – “Your Student’s Success at Purdue,” Stewart Center, Room 214BCD
Your student’s success is our highest priority. What are programs like BGRi, BGR and MIX designed to do? Recent studies show that international students who participate in BGRi have a higher academic standing. Program leaders from these and other campus initiatives will answer your questions about what your students will be learning and experiencing this week and beyond.  

11:30 AM – 1:30 PM – Lunch (On Your Own) with Student in Dining Court 

1:30 PM – 2:45 PM – “Just for International Parents," Stewart Center, Room 214AB
Purdue Parents and Families Director, Kelley Stier, will lead this question and answer session.

3:00 – 4:30 PM – Bus Tour of Purdue Campus
Take this riding tour to gain a broader view of Purdue’s 700 acre West Lafayette campus. The tour will include a drive-by of the outer areas of the campus. The tour bus will depart from the Purdue Memorial Union Hotel east entrance (across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage) with stops at the Co-Rec, Discovery Park and Armstrong Hall of Engineering. (Bus sign up required.)

8:00 PM – Official Welcome Event for BGRi Students, Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center
Parents are welcome to attend this special event, also attended by West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis and key Purdue staff. Reserved seating for parents is in balcony section.

Thursday, August 14

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Home Room, Stewart Center, Room 214AB
Parents orientation staff and volunteers welcome you to stop by Stewart Center, Room 214AB anytime during open hours. No question is off limits! 

9:00 AM – Hour-long walking tour of campus

10:00 AM – 11:15 AM – “Just for International Parents," Stewart Center, Room 214AB
Purdue staff and student volunteers will lead this question and answer session just for international parents and their families. Topics: Academic Success, Student Health and Wellness, Co-Curricular Programs

11:30 AM – 1:30 PM –Downtown Tour of Main Street and Lunch (On Your Own) 
The trolley picks up passengers on State Street across from Purdue Memorial Union. We will have a leisurely hour to stroll down Main Street and head for lunch (on your own) at noon at a local restaurant. (Sign up required.)

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Tour of Center for Career Opportunities (CCO), Young Hall, Room 132
Upon returning to PMU parents can walk directly to CCO in Young Hall. Learn about the resources at Purdue for your student to develop his/her career plans and land a job after graduation. Early planning is essential!

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM – Welcome Reception for International Parents, Dauch Alumni Center
International parents are invited to a reception to meet Purdue staff who are eager to meet you! Parents leave CCO and walk to the Dauch Alumni Center, a block south of Stewart Center, on the corner of Grant and Wood Streets. (Event sign up required.)

Friday, August 15

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Home Room, Stewart Center, Room 214AB
Last day of parents’ orientation. Take advantage of orientation staff to get your questions answered!

8:30 AM – 11:30 AM – BGRi students move out of Earhart and into their permanent residences. Parents are free to assist their student as they wish. 

11:30 AM – 1:30 PM – Lunch (On Your Own) with Student in Dining Court 

2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Tour of Co-Rec Center (across from Wiley Dining Court)
Tour this award winning center where your student can maintain health and fitness. Guided walking tour led by Co-Rec staff.  (Sign up required.)

3:00 PM – 3:50 PM  – Tips for Parents,” Stewart Center, Room 214AB
Purdue Parents and Families Director, Kelley Stier, will lead this week’s wrap up session and provide tips for parents to relate to their student while living and studying abroad as international students. Student success depends on parents and students building healthy connections that will facilitate students’ growth, development and well-being.
