International Parents' Orientation

International parents and family members of students attending BGRi are welcome to International Parents' Orientation. Direct questions about orientation schedule to Beth Tucker, IPprograms@purdue.edu.
Day One – Friday, August 14
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Lunch (On Your Own)
1:30 PM – 5:00 PM – International Parents’ Home Base, Stewart Center, Room 214
After arriving on campus, parents will want to go to Stewart Center, Room 214, to get their parents’ registration packet and learn more about parent orientation presentations and activities led by IP staff and student volunteers.
5:00-6:30 PM - Community Bus Tours, Welcome to Greater Lafayette
Lafayette-West Lafayette is a wonderful community in which to live, work and play. Learn more about the history and amenities of this community by participating in the Greater Lafayette bus tour. Bus will leave from Purdue Memorial Union east entrance, across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage.
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM - Picnic at Columbian Park, Lafayette
End the community bus tour at Columbian Park. Stroll the grounds, see the zoo and sports park and enjoy a picnic supper at Picnic Shelters 1-3. Meet Purdue staff, community members and Mayors Tony Rozwarski and John Dennis.
Day Two – Saturday, August 15
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM - “Your Student’s Success at Purdue,” Stewart Center, Room 214
Your student’s success is our highest priority. What are programs like BGRi, BGR and MIX designed to do? Recent studies show that international students who participate in BGRi have a higher academic standing. Staff will answer your questions about what your students will be learning and experiencing this week and beyond.
10:00 – 11:00 AM – “Just for International Parents," Stewart Center, Room 214
Purdue Parents and Families Director, Kelley Stier, will lead this opening session on how parents can help their students be successful.
11:15 AM – 3:00 PM – Downtown Tour, Farmer’s Market, Lunch and BEARS!
Board buses at Purdue Memorial Union east entrance across the street next to Grant Street Parking Garage at 11:15am. Buses will drop off in downtown Lafayette. Stroll down Main Street, stop in at Farmer’s Market on 5th Street and have lunch at a local restaurant. Explore local shops and artist galleries and hunt for bears!
3:30-4:45 PM – “Your Student’s Health, Wellness and Safety,” Stewart Center, Room 214
Captain Eric Chin from the Purdue University Campus Police will share important information about campus safety. Purdue Student Health and Counseling and Psychological Services staff will share information about health insurance and using campuses services for health and wellbeing.
5:00 – 7:00 PM – Dinner (On Your Own)
8:00 PM – Official Welcome Event for BGRi Students, Elliott Hall of Music
Parents are welcome to attend this special opening event for BGRi participants, also attended by West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis and key Purdue staff. Reserved seating for parents.
Day Three – Sunday, August 16
9:00 AM – 10:30 AM – “Your Student’s Academic Success," Stewart Center, Room 214
Academic advisors will discuss essentials of academics and academic advising that parents won’t want to miss. Your student’s relationship with their academic advisor will be key to their success and ability to graduate in four years.
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Open House Brunch, International Center, 523 N. Russell Street, West Lafayette (NOT CONFIRMED)
1:30 PM – 3:00 PM – “Leadership Development Opportunities," Stewart Center, Room 214
Trevor Foley, from Krach Center for Leadership and Darshini Render from Engineering, will highlight SAO, CCO and College of Engineering resources that students can utilize in order to develop skills to land that first job after graduation.
3:00-3:50 PM and 4:00-4:50 PM – Bus tour of Purdue campus
This tour will give you a broad view of Purdue’s 700 acre West Lafayette campus and includes a drive-by of the outer areas of campus. Bus departs from the Purdue Memorial Union Hotel east entrance (across street next to Grant Street Parking Garage) with stops at Co-Rec, Discovery Park and Armstrong Hall of Engineering.
5:00 PM – 7:00 PM – Dinner (On Your Own)
7:00 PM – 11 PM – Free Time
Day Four – Monday, August 17
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Hour-long walking tour of campus
Discover Purdue through a morning walking tour of the central campus. The hour-long tour will depart from the PMU Welcome Center and will be led by Welcome Center student ambassadors. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Parents Q & A Open Forum, Stewart Center, Room 214
Stop by before or after the walking tour to discuss topics that are on your mind, or are from sessions you missed, topics such as academics, student health and wellness, residential life and extra-curricular involvement.
11:00 AM – 11:45 AM – “Nuts and Bolts of Maintaining F-1 and J-1 Visa Status,” Stewart Center, Room 214
Your student is responsible to maintain the requirements of their F-1/J-1 visa status while they are studying in the U.S. It’s helpful for parents to know and understand their student’s responsibilities. Come hear the information that your student is made aware of in their MISC session.
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM – Lunch (On Your Own)
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Tips for Parents,” Stewart Center, Room 214
Your student’s success depends on working in partnership with your student. Residence Hall and IP staff will provide tips for parents to build healthy connections and develop life skills.
3:00 PM – 3:50 PM and 4:00 PM – 4:50 PM – Bus Tours of Sports Complexes
Find out about Big Ten intercollegiate athletics and the athletic facilities available to all Purdue students for physical fitness during this tour. The tour will depart from the Purdue Memorial Union Hotel east entrance (across street next to Grant Street Parking Garage).
5:00 PM – 7:00 PM – Dinner (On Your Own)
7:00 PM – 11:00 PM – Wal-Mart Trip
CityBus will make runs for students to do night shopping. You are also welcome to take the bus to Wal-Mart for shopping.
Day Five – Tuesday, August 18
9:00 AM – 10:30 AM – International Student Resource Fair (academic side of campus)
10:30 AM – 11:45 AM – Tour of Córdova Recreational Sports Center
Co-Rec Staff will give guided tours of this award winning center where students can maintain health and fitness.
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM - Lunch (On Your Own)
2:00 – 3:30 PM – Parent Reception, Córdova Recreational Sports Center
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM – New Student Induction, Mackey Arena
5:30 PM – 7:00 PM – Dinner with Student/Say Goodbyes
