  • International parents and family members of students attending BGRi are invited to the International Parent Welcome events and sessions.

 

Day One – Friday, August 12

9:00AM – 5:00 PM – International Parent Welcome Check-In, Tarkington Hall (TARK)
After arriving on campus, parents will  want to go to Tarkington Hall to get their parent welcome packet and learn more about parent welcome events and sessions organized by International Programs staff and student ambassadors.

9:00 AM / 11:00 AM / 1:00 PM / 3:00 PM – Walking tour of campus, Tarkington Hall (TARK)
Discover Purdue through a walking tour of the central campus. The hour-long tour, led by Welcome Center student ambassadors, will depart from Tarkington Hall and end at the Córdova Recreational Sports Center. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

10:00 AM / 12:00 PM / 2:00 PM / 4:00 PM – Tour of Córdova Recreational Sports Center (CREC)
Parents are welcome to walk around inside this award winning modern fitness and wellness facility (CoRec) where students can maintain health and fitness through five levels of gymnasiums, courts, cardio & strength equipment, swimming pools, and a 55 ft. high climbing wall!

5:00 – 7:30 PM – Experience a Dining Court, Earhart Dining Hall (ERHT)
Here is the chance for parents to experience what it is like to eat in a dining court! Come to Earhart Dining Hall to enjoy an all-you-care-to-eat buffet-style meal and to socialize with other international parents. (Parents will pay a flat fee of $12.73 each for the meal. Cash and credit cards are accepted including Visa, Mastercard and Discover).

Day Two – Saturday, August 13

9:00 AM – 1:00 PM – International Parent Welcome Check-In, Tarkington Hall (TARK)
After arriving on campus, parents will  want to go to Tarkington Hall to get their parent welcome packet and learn more about parent welcome events and sessions organized by International Programs staff and student ambassadors.

10:00 AM / 11:30 AM / 1:00 PM / 2:30 PM – Bus tour of Purdue campus, Tarkington (TARK)
This 1.5 hour bus tour will give you a broad view of Purdue’s 700 acre West Lafayette campus and includes a drive-by of the outer areas of campus. Bus departs from Tarkington Hall, with stops at Co-Rec, Discovery Park, Ross Ade Stadium, Mackey Arena, and Armstrong Hall of Engineering. Seating is limited, and tours will run on a first-come, first-served basis.

12:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Tour Amazon@Purdue, Krach Leadership Center (KRCH)
Amazon@Purdue gives Purdue students a convenient, cost-saving option for receiving textbooks and other college essentials from Amazon, as well as a hassle-free way to return textbook rentals and other orders. Come visit this convenient and secure spot for students to pick up their packages and learn from Amazon staff how to ship orders to Purdue.

8:00 PM – Official Welcome Event for BGRi Students, Elliott Hall of Music (ELLT)
Parents are welcome to attend this special opening event for BGRi participants, also attended by West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis and key Purdue staff.  Reserved seating for parents in the balcony.

Day Three – Sunday, August 14

9:00 – 10:00 AM – “Campus Safety,” Elliott Hall of Music (ELLT)
Parents are invited to join students in Elliott Hall to hear important information about campus safety.

10:30 – 11:30 AM – “Your Student’s Transition to Purdue,” Stewart Center, Room 306 (STEW)
Your student’s success at Purdue is our highest priority. Recent studies show that international students who participate in BGRi have a higher academic standing. Student Success staff will explain what your students will be learning and experiencing this week and beyond.  Purdue University Parent & Family Connections engages parents as partners in student success by helping parents and families understand the goals of the University community, serving as a central point of contact, and creating positive long-term relationships between parents, families, and the University.  The Director of Parent & Family Connections will share information about how international parents can assist during their student’s transition to Purdue.

11:30 AM – 1:00 PM – Welcome Reception for International Parents, Dauch Alumni Center (DAUCH)
All international parents and family members are invited to an hors d’oeuvres reception to hear words of welcome and meet a variety of Purdue administrative staff including Purdue’s Director of International Admissions, Associate Director of Advancement, and Dean of International Programs, among others. During the reception, take advantage of the venue’s interactive kiosks and exhibits showcasing Purdue’s history and alumni achievements. Lastly, be sure to pose for a photograph in the Dauch Alumni Center’s life-size Boilermaker Express train!

1:30 – 3:00 PM – “Your Student’s Health and Wellness,” Stewart Center, Room 306 (STEW)
Your student’s health and wellness are a top priority at Purdue. In this session, Purdue University Student Health (PUSH), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and Pharmacy staff will share information about health insurance and how your student can use campus services for health and well being.

3:30-4:30 PM – “Your Student’s Residence and Dining Life,” Stewart Center, Room 306 (STEW)
The goal of University Residences is to develop living environments that value learning opportunities and personal growth and development. Residence Hall staff will provide tips for parents to build healthy connections and help their student develop life skills. Dining staff will explain meal plans and dining court options. Day Four – Monday, August 15

Academic advisor, Karen Morgan, will discuss essentials of academics and academic advising that parents won’t want to miss. Your student’s relationship with their academic advisor will be key to their success and ability to graduate in four years.

Day Five – Tuesday, August 16

Visit tables sponsored by various international groups to learn more about how your student can get involved on campus.

10:00 – 11:00 AM –  “Your Student’s F-1 or J-1 Visa Status,” Stewart Center, Room 306 (STEW)
Your student is responsible to maintain the requirements of their F-1/J-1 visa status while they are studying in the U.S. It’s helpful for parents to know and understand their student’s responsibilities. Come hear the information that your student is made aware of in their MISC session, presented by an immigration counselor from the Office of International Students and Scholars.

At Purdue, learning occurs both inside and outside of the classroom.  It’s helpful for parents to understand the range of opportunities available and encourage their student to consider taking advantage of the value such experiences offer.  Learn more about student organizations and involvement opportunities through Student Activities and Organizations (SAO) and InterCultural Learning (ICL) through the Office of International Programs.

Parents and family members are invited to enjoy refreshments with University leaders and staff members and mingle with one another while their student(s) attend floor meetings. Remarks from University leaders will begin at 2:45 p.m. and will include information about the orientation experience.

4:00 – 5:00 PM – New Student Induction, Mackey Arena (MACK)
The ceremony will feature university faculty and administration, designed to preview commencement and acknowledge the beginning of the students' experience at Purdue just as commencement formally recognizes the successful completion of their undergraduate career.

5:30 – 7:00 PM – Dinner with Student/Say Goodbyes
At the conclusion of the New Student Induction, students and their families are encouraged to have dinner on their own and say “see you soon” before students begin the first Boiler Gold Rush activities for the evening
